Echoes of War

Legacies of the Civil War in North Kerry

About the project

Echoes of War is a Royal Irish Academy funded project investigating the aftermath of the Civil War across North Kerry, a region where the conflict left a uniquely traumatic legacy. The project explores how much violence/intimidation/fear continued to resonate in local everyday life in the years that followed. It examines how families and communities here dealt with the death, injury and loss of loved ones caused by the struggle. It also charts the history of locally initiated commemorative projects to both pro and anti-Treaty forces in North Kerry.

Oral histories

A central part of this project, led by Dr Richard McElligott, is to contact people across North Kerry who are the close relatives of those who took an active part in the conflict. The intention is to interview, record and preserve, as an oral history, what they remember about the experiences of these individuals and their families in the years following the Civil War. If you, or somebody you know, would be interested in participating, please contact us
